Chronic Homelessness
According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), chronic homelessness is defined as the status of someone who has been living in the street or shelters for over a year. Individuals who experience chronic homelessness typically face challenges with mental health, substance use, physical difficulties, or a combination of these issues as a result of or precursor to homelessness.
Citizens experiencing chronic homelessness are generally believed to be adult individuals. While adults represent the majority of those experiencing chronic homelessness, families with children and unaccompanied youth are also subject to living without housing for a long period of time.
Due to the varied challenges people experiencing chronic homelessness face, once placed in housing, they are still in need of support services. Because of this reality, solutions for chronic homelessness include a variety of supportive housing models. Supportive housing is the combination of affordable housing and services that accommodate needs on an individual basis with the intention of cultivating independence and success. Some of these supportive services may include: counseling, nutrition education, medical care, recovery assistance, job skills training, and more.
